Device Locks
If you have received a notification from gboi@greenbox.com.au with a secure link to our Lock Management System this indicates that the devices we have received from you are locked. Please follow the steps below in order to unlock the devices.
Devices used in enterprises are often secured by the IT departments using software like MDM (Mobile Device Management), iCloud, Intune, BIOS (Basic Input Output System) locks and other enterprise software. However, when the lease ends or it’s time to return the devices for value recovery, data sanitisation or recycling, these security measures can become roadblocks that need to be cleared. Leaving these locks on will significantly impact the value recovery, reuse process, service levels and locked assets contribute to e-waste which is hazardous to our environment.
This article will guide you through removing these locks to enable smooth transition at the end of your asset lifecycle.
Please note these are general instructions, and every make or model of the device may have a separate set of instructions. Please contact your IT asset team if you need more information.
MDM, Intune and Autopilot
MDM solutions like Apple’s MDM for iOS devices or Microsoft’s Intune for Windows devices provide centralized control over devices including remote wiping capabilities, security policy enforcement etc.
For Apple’s MDM, follow these steps:
- Backup all important data.
- Reset the device to factory settings via “Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.”
- During setup after reset, there will be an ‘Remote Management’ screen if MDM is installed.
- Contact your IT department to remove this device from MDM server.
For Microsoft Intune on Windows devices:
- Open “Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.”
- Find connected services which might be controlled by Intune & select it.
- Click on ‘Disconnect’ button to remove the device from management.
If disconnecting doesn’t work due to admin blocks, reach out to your IT department or service provider.
For Microsoft Autopilot lock on devices:
Please follow the instructions outlined in the PDF below.
iCloud
Apple’s iCloud has an activation lock feature as an anti-theft measure which links a device with Apple ID of user.
- Start with signing out from iCloud & iTunes account (‘Settings > [User Name]’)
- Prepare a backup if needed then erase all content (‘Settings > General > Reset’).
- Restart the device which now should not have attached Apple ID anymore.
For more detailed instructions, follow the link below or contact Apple Support directly if you face issues related with this procedure.
BIOS Locks
BIOS is a fundamental part of a computer system – it boots up your system and initiates all the hardware components. To remove BIOS passwords or settings:
- Restart your machine.
- Press the specific key (usually F2 or DEL) to enter BIOS Setup.
- Look under ‘Security’ or ‘Boot’ options in your BIOS setup menu.
- Select ‘Change Supervisor Password,’ ‘Reset Password,’ or similar.
- Enter the current password then leave the new password fields blank.
- Save changes and exit.
In cases where you don’t have the current password or can’t access BIOS setup due to restrictions, contact your leasing company for support or check with the device manufacturer.
